Glasshouse Redevelopment in Horkesley Hamlet, Essex

ADP secured planning consent for the demolition of the existing glasshouse site at the edge of Horkesley Hamlet, Essex and its redevelopment of 22 residential dwellings.

The key planning and design challenges included:

  • Redevelopment of the dilapidated glasshouse buildings;

  • Proximity to the Grade I Listed Church of All Saints; and

  • Proximity to the Dedham Vale Area of Natural Beauty.

We developed an integrated planning and design strategy that was informed by progressive consultation and engagement with key stakeholders, including Historic England and Essex County Council. The principles included:

  • Enhancement measures to improve the setting to both the AONB and the Church of All Saints and other nearby listed buildings.

  • Individually designed dwellings to reflect local character.

  • A site layout arranged in a manner that was informed by the historic evolution of rural settlements, taking into account their uniqueness, juxtaposition and function.

The quality of this scheme at Horkesley Hamlet has been recognised by Place Services at Essex County Council and was included in the Essex Design Guide as an exemplar case study. Further details can be found on the Essex Design Guide’s website.
